HP DESKJET 820 AND 1000 SERIES PRINTERS - PROBLEMS PRINTING FROM THE
DOS SHELL IN WINDOWS 95
ISSUE: The HP DeskJet 820 and 1000 series printers will not
print from a DOS application when accessed through a
Windows icon or when shelled out in MS-DOS (R). No
error messages are generated on the computer and no
lights blink on the printer. Printing from within
Windows 95 works fine.
SOLUTION:
1. If the DOS application will not print when
accessed from the application's Windows icon, try
accessing the application through the MS-DOS
prompt. To do this:
a. Choose Start, Programs and select MS-DOS
Prompt.
b. At the C:\ prompt, type the path to the DOS
application and press ENTER.
c. Retry printing from the DOS application.
d. If unable to print, proceed with step #2.
2. Try printing a directory from the DOS shell to
establish printer functionality in DOS and to
verify that the problem is not application
specific. To do this:
a. Choose Start, Programs, then MS-DOS Prompt.
b. At the C:\ prompt, type DIR>LPT1 and press
ENTER.
If the directory prints, contact the DOS program
technical support to verify the correct printer
settings within the DOS program.
3. If the directory does not print, check the
following settings:
a. Choose Start, Settings, then Printers.
b. For the HP DeskJet 820C series printer make
sure that only one icon is installed. Also
ensure the printer icon name has not been
changed. It must read "HP DeskJet 820C
Series Printer." If more than one exists,
remove all HP DeskJet 820C Series Printer
icons except the one labeled "HP DeskJet 820C
Series Printer." Highlight the extra icon,
then choose File and Delete to remove it.
c. Highlight the remaining HP DeskJet 820C
Series Printer or HP DeskJet 1000C Printer
icon. Choose File and look for a check next
to Set As Default. If there is not a check,
highlight the Set As Default line and click
once. If the check is already there, cancel
the File menu by clicking once on any blank
space. The File menu will disappear.
d. Choose File, Properties, then Details. Make
sure the correct port and printer driver are
selected.
e. Choose Port Settings. Ensure that the box
labeled "Spool MS-DOS print jobs" is
selected. Choose OK.
f. Choose Spool Settings. Ensure that the box
labeled "Enable bidirectional support for
this printer" is selected. Choose OK.
4. Try printing a directory from DOS again. If the
printer still does not print, type MODE LPT1:,,P
at the C:\ prompt and press ENTER.
5. Try printing the DOS directory again. If the
directory still does not print, delete and
reinstall the printer driver. (Refer to Topic
document #BPD02922 or HP First document #4035 for
the HP DeskJet 820 series printer. Refer to Topic
document #BPD04462 or HP First document #4227 for
the HP DeskJet 1000 series printer.)
6. Try printing the DOS directory again. If the
directory still does not print, contact Windows 95
technical support to verify that the LPT.vxd file
in Windows 95 is the latest version.
7. If possible, try installing the printer driver
software on another computer and try printing.
NOTE: If printing problems continue, contact
the Hewlett-Packard Customer Support
Center listed in the printer's User's
Guide.
