GERMAN CHOCOLATE CAKE Regi Dean's Recipes 08/21/99 Deserts Shirley Williams {*****} sugar 2 cups egg yolks 4 baking soda 1 tsp. vanilla 1 tsp. sweet chocolate bars 1 pkg. shortening 1 cup buttermilk 1 cup cups flour 2-1/2 hot water 1/2 cup egg whites, beaten 4 {**********} Cream shortening, add sugar gradually with cintinual heating. Melt chocolate in 1/2 cup hot water(over double boiler) allow to cool. Add yolks to creamed mixture, 1 at a time,mixing well. Sift flour and measure. Mix baking soda and buttermilk. Add flour alternately with buttermilk to creamed mixture, starting with flour and ending with flour. Next, add the chocolate and vanilla, fold in beaten egg whites, using rubber spatula. Bake in large 9 X 13 X 2 inch cake pan about 50 minutes in a preheated oven at 350 degrees. Allow to cool, but while still warm, cover with the icing. (You can also bake this cake in 2 - 9" round cake pans)
